Hike: Passaconaway & Square Ledge

Lindsay and I hiked our first New Hampshire 4000 Footer together on a beautiful October weekend. After hitting Mount Passaconaway and its viewpoint, we headed out to Square Ledge to check out the retired 52 with a View.

ROUTE

  • Parked at Ferncroft Trailhead parking on Ferncroft Road in Albany, NH
  • Hiked up Old Mast Road to 4-Way Intersection
  • Left on Walden Trail to summit of Mount Passaconaway
  • Left on Passaconaway View Spur to viewpoint and back
  • Left back down Walden Trail to intersection with Square Ledge Trail
  • Left on Square Ledge Trail to Square Ledge and back to 4-Way Intersection
  • Left on Old Mast Road back to parking

Winter hike Whiteface and Passaconaway

In early 2017 my friend Michael and hike snowshoed a loop of Mount Whiteface and Mount Passaconaway. I was grabbing them for my Grid and Winter New Hampshire 4000 Footers lists, and he was getting them for his New Hampshire 4000 Footers list.

ROUTE

  • Parked at Ferncroft Parking of Ferncroft Road
  • Walked down Ferncroft Road to Blueberry Ledge Trail
  • Snowshoed up Blueberry Ledge Trail to intersection with Rollins Trail
  • Continued up Rollins Trail to Mount Whiteface summit and along the ridge to Dicey’s Mill Trail
  • Turned left at Dicey’s Mill Trail and hiked up to Passaconaway summit and to Walden Trail
  • Turned right on Walden Trail and down to Wonalancet Ridge Trail
  • Turned right on Wonalancet Ridge Trail to Hibbard Mountain and Mount Wonalancet, and then down to Old Mast Road
  • Turned right on Old Mast Road and returned to Ferncroft parking

Bike & Hike: Sandwich Range Traverse

Trail Report

When I purchased my commuter bike this year, one of the reasons I chose a touring bike over a cross bike was so I could do some bike camping. As September rolled around I took a week off from work to do some hiking which was the perfect opportunity to try out a bike and hike. I had been eyeing the 4000 Footers in the Sandwich Range and knew I wanted to complete them as traverse.

After some bike route and trail planning, I put together what I thought would be a great bike and hike. I would bike from Gorham, ME to the Kancamagus, drop my bike off at the Oliverian Brook trailhead, walk along the Kancamagus to the Sabbaday Brook Trail, spend three days hiking along the Sandwhich Range, and then bike back to Gorham.
